A Game-Changer for Driver Onboarding at Relay Logistics: Made with Glide

I had the pleasure of working with Relay Logistics, a UK-based delivery company known for its efficient delivery services. Relay Logistics is similar to the Amazon package delivery that we know and love, however, Relay Logistics is on a mission to streamline their operations and enhance their delivery services across the country.

They are a key player in the UK’s delivery sector, focusing on contracting delivery drivers to handle a vast array of packages. Their goal is to optimize their delivery process to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability. But as with any successful company, Relay Logistics has its own issues.

When they reached out to me about the opportunity to work with them to create an application, I knew Glide was the perfect solution to their woes.

What Relay Logistics Was Looking For in an App

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Relay Logistics had no issues with moving products. Their primary challenges existed in the onboarding, vetting, and training of hundreds of drivers annually due to high turnover rates. Their existing onboarding platform was not only costly but also inefficient for their expanding needs.

They needed a tool that was going to allow them to have complete and total control over their own onboarding and training process. Due to the nature of their industry, the amount of money they were spending on subpar onboarding was simply unacceptable.

How I Used Glide to Put Relay Logistics in Control of Onboarding

For Relay Logistics, I developed a bespoke Delivery Driver Onboarding platform tailored specifically to their workflow. This platform allowed drivers to submit all necessary information, including banking and tax details, and sign documents electronically.

For the admins, it provided a comprehensive view of the onboarding status, including the ability to upload driver's licenses and drug test results. A key feature was the scalability of the platform, allowing for expansion to multiple locations with distinct branding.

Now, Relay Logistics could onboard new drivers and vet them all in one application.

My Workflow

My strategy was to replicate and enhance the existing onboarding workflow while giving Relay Logistics control over their own procedures. So, I aimed to maintain the aspects they liked about their previous system while introducing cost-effective and scalable solutions.

I also made sure to amplify internal admin capabilities and ensure the platform could be replicated across various locations. Given that Relay Logistics is a delivery company, this was a must.

Three Key Features of Relay Logistics’ New App

  1. Outlining the Onboarding Steps: I mapped out the 10 steps each driver undergoes during onboarding, including training, information submission, and waivers.

  2. Building the Admin Side: I made it so that admins can review applications, upload additional materials, and approve or deny drivers.

  3. Enhancing Communication and Scalability: I integrated email notifications to keep all parties informed and enabled the platform to support multiple locations simultaneously.

The Final Product

In the six months since the launch, the Relay Logistics onboarding app has successfully onboarded over 500 drivers and facilitated the electronic signing of more than 2500 documents.

Testimonials:

  • Usman Muhammad: “Darren was amazing! Despite the time difference, he managed the project effectively and was always receptive to our feedback, delivering exactly what we needed.”

  • Muzahid Ali: “Darren delivered exactly what we asked for with our CRM app. It's clean, practical, and we're excited for the next update!”

What I Learned from Working with Relay Logistics

As always, I like to include something I learned or a tool I was able to use more with each project. While working with Relay Logistics, I was introduced to DocsAutomator, a tool that significantly streamlines document creation by populating Google Doc templates with data. This discovery was a game-changer, saving time and enhancing efficiency in document management.

I’m really excited to use DocsAutomator with future application development projects, especially using Glide. I think that this tool will make a big impact on my future client work.

Finally, this project was not only enjoyable but also a testament to the power of custom solutions. I love creating custom apps because they allow the client to reach their fullest potential while making sure that every dollar they spend goes toward features they want that work the way they want them to.
